Mountaneô welcomes you to the Orlu valley, in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees, to open a window on the mysteries of the mountains. This museum combines modernity and sensitivity – interactive installations, sound, light and immersion – to give you a feel for the mountains before you even set foot in them. You’ll discover the importance of water, hydroelectricity and the environment, in a simple, accessible setting designed for all ages. Games, discoveries and immersion for young and old alike – the mountains are effortless.
At Mountaneô, the visit is divided into several phases – museum, interactive games, nature and energy – for total immersion. First, take part in the “Hydrogame”, an immersive, interactive game that helps you understand the issues surrounding water and hydraulic energy in the valley. Then, enter the play area and “reserve house” to explore the biodiversity, flora and fauna of the region. For the curious and the passionate, a guided tour of the Orlu hydroelectric power station – the only one open to the public in Ariège – offers a hands-on insight into the workings of an energy plant. Last but not least, hikes, nature walks and the discovery of the mountain heritage extend the outdoor experience in total immersion. From the complex
From Les Cabannes, an easy escape to the mountains!
To reach Mountaneô from Complexe des Oustalous (Cabannes), take the road towards Ax-les-Thermes and then the RD22 to Orlu, passing through pretty Ariege villages and remarkable mountain scenery. On-site parking is easy, and shuttle buses from Ax-les-Thermes are available for those who prefer not to drive. The itinerary is simple and pleasant, offering a first immersion in the beauty of the Pyrenees even before arriving at the museum, where you can take full advantage of the interactive installations and nature trails for a complete experience.
