Carla-Bayle
perched art village overlooking the Pyrenees
History, galleries and panoramic views in one of Ariège’s most beautiful villages
Clinging to a promontory overlooking the Lèze valley, Carla-Bayle captivates visitors with its medieval heritage, artistic ambience and spectacular views of the Pyrenees mountain range. Classed as a village of character, it’s an ideal destination for strolling, discovering works of art or simply enjoying the peace and quiet.
An artists’ village
alive all year round
Workshops, exhibitions and galleries in the alleyways
Today, Carla-Bayle is an artists’ village, with a dozen permanent galleries and workshops open to the public. In summer, the “Été de l’art” festival transforms the village into an open-air gallery. Painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography are all on show in a unique setting.
A rich heritage
and committed
Birthplace of philosopher Pierre Bayle, cradle of freedom of thought
Carla-Bayle was the birthplace of Pierre Bayle, a 17th-century Protestant philosopher and advocate of religious tolerance. The Pierre Bayle Museum traces his work and the village’s turbulent past, marked by the Wars of Religion. The narrow streets of the village still feature some fine examples of early architecture.
