Château de Roquefixade
Cathar fortress suspended in the void
A site steeped in history and an exceptional panorama
Clinging to a sheer cliff over 900 meters above sea level, the Château de Roquefixade dominates the valley of Lavelanet and the Pays d’Olmes. Less well known than Montségur, this Cathar site offers an equally spectacular setting, with the added bonus of rare tranquillity and panoramic views over the Ariège Pyrenees.
An easy hike
to access the fortress
Approximately 30 to 45 minutes’ ascent from the village
The trail starts in the heart of the village of Roquefixade, with its pretty stone houses. It climbs through the forest before leading to the ridges. Reaching the château is well worth the effort, but is accessible to the whole family, with safe passages and numerous viewpoints along the way.
Cathar history
and fascinating ruins
A bastion of resistance destroyed by order of the King of France
Like Montségur, Roquefixade was a refuge for persecuted Cathars in the 13th century. Partially destroyed after the crusade against the Albigensians, the castle retains its walls, ruined towers and strong evocative power. Explanatory panels explain the history of the site.
