Discover the Salon Noir, a unique room where prehistoric art comes to life in the Grotte de Niaux!

The guided tour, which lasts around 1 hour 45 minutes, takes you up to the famous “Salon Noir” at 700 metres, a vast rotunda decorated with bison, horses, deer and ibex painted in prehistoric times – over 70 animal representations are visible. The journey from 800 to 1,600 m is made by torchlight, in silence and darkness, creating a unique, almost mystical atmosphere, for a total immersion in ancient times. Just 17 km – a short, direct drive!

From Les Cabannes, allow around 20-25 minutes to reach Grotte de Niaux (17 km). Take the Dxx, then the N20 towards Tarascon-sur-Ariège/Niaux; a parking lot near the ticket office makes it easy to get there. Remember to check seasonal timetables before setting off.
