Le Montcalm

An emblematic summit for seasoned hikers
The highest peak in the Ariège region, Montcalm sits at 3,077 m, on the border between France and Spain. Nicknamed the “roof of the Ariège”, it attracts hundreds of hikers every summer to take up the challenge of the climb. It’s a mythical, demanding but unforgettable race, reserved for well-prepared walkers.
An ascent
long and sustained
Approx. 10 to 12 h round trip from the Artigue parking lot
Departure is from the Artigue parking lot, above Auzat. The route is signposted and passes by the Pinet refuge (2,240 m), often used as an overnight stopover. The climb then continues to the Col du Montcalm and the summit, with a cumulative vertical drop of around +2,100 m. Stamina, equipment and good weather are essential.

View of the 3000 Ariege, the Aneto and the Spanish massifs
From the summit, the view stretches as far as the eye can see of the high Pyrenean peaks, including the Pic d’Estats (3,143 m), which can be reached in a further 45 minutes. On a clear day, you can even see the Catalan and Andorran peaks. The scenery is mineral, wild and impressive.
