Natura 2000 in Ariège
preserving biodiversity in the Pyrenees
Protected natural areas for a living, accessible nature
Ariège is home to numerous Natura 2000 sites, a European label designed to protect natural habitats and endangered species. These areas cover forests, wetlands, mountains, caves and mountain pastures, and offer an exceptional setting for hiking, observing or discovering flora and fauna.
Varied landscapes
and rich in species
Between deep forests, cliffs, lakes and high-altitude meadows
From the Mont Valier massif to the Plantaurel, via the Couserans and Vicdessos valleys, Ariège’s Natura 2000 sites are renowned for their biodiversity. Here you can observe the isard, the bearded vulture, the otter and rare wild orchids. Signposted footpaths provide environmentally-friendly access.
Unspoilt nature
open to the public
Hiking, observation, gentle discovery… it’s all possible.
Contrary to popular belief, Natura 2000 sites are not off-limits. They are designed to reconcile human activities with respect for ecosystems. Interpretation panels, guided tours and mobile applications help visitors to better understand these sensitive environments.
