Less than an hour from the Ville Rose, a multitude of trails wind through wooded hillsides, limestone gorges and pre-Pyrenean hills. Whether you’re just passing through for a few days or on a camping vacation in Toulouse, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for on the hiking trails around Toulouse.

Just thirty kilometers southeast of Toulouse, the Lauragais region offers gentle, year-round hiking between the plains and the foothills of the Pyrenees. This transitional region between plains and mountains appeals to walkers in search of open horizons.

Accessible to all, this 7 km trail winds around the lake in a bucolic setting. About 25 minutes’ drive from Toulouse (via the D813). In summer, this hiking trail in the heart of the Lauragais region combines swimming and walking. On a clear day, the horizon reveals the silhouette of the foothills of the Pyrenees. Elevation gain: 100 m – Duration: 2 h – Difficulty: easy.

From this hilltop village, about 1 h 10 from Toulouse via the A61 or D622, a 10 km circuit winds through fields and groves. At the top, the panorama stretches as far as the Pyrenees if the sky is clear. Elevation gain: 250 m – Duration: 3 h – Difficulty: medium.

Volvestre hiking: between Toulouse and the Pyrenees

Head southwest to Volvestre, on the border between Haute-Garonne and Ariège, where the Garonne River forms a peaceful valley framed by hills. Here, hikes offer views of the Pyrenees in the distance.

Departure from Saint-Julien-sur-Garonne (40 min from Toulouse via D117) for an easy, well-marked hike on well-marked dirt roads, in the heart of an agricultural landscape punctuated by pastures and small forests. At the top of the slopes, the view extends over the Lauragais plain, with a glimpse of the Pyrenees when the sky is clear. Difference in altitude: 150 m – Duration: 2 h 30 – Difficulty: easy.

Rieux-Volvestre, a charming medieval village (45 min from Toulouse via D117), is the starting point for a signposted trail that alternates between forest paths, passages over open ridges and small country lanes offering superb panoramic views over the Arize valley. At every turn, the silhouette of the Pyrenees comes closer. Distance: 11 km (loop) – Difference in altitude: 300 m – Duration: 3 h – Difficulty: medium.

The Comminges foothills: the first Pyrenean mountains

Around Saint-Gaudens, the mountains become more pronounced. These Comminges foothills, around 1 hr 10 min from Toulouse, mark the beginnings of the central Pyrenees. Here you’ll find a mountain atmosphere without the constraints of altitude.

A great classic. At 1,912 metres, the Cagire offers a moderate but spectacular hike. Start from Juzet-d’Izaut (1h10 from Toulouse via A64, Saint-Gaudens exit). If you’re in a hurry, you can make do with the ascent to the Larreix hut, for an almost identical panorama in an “express” version. Distance: 12 km return – Start at 750 m altitude, gradual ascent through forests and pastures. Difference in altitude: 1,100 m – Duration: 5 to 6 h – Difficulty: sustained.

Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, this trail leads from the village of Aspet (1h10 from Toulouse) along a wooded gorge to waterfalls nestled deep in the forest. The route winds its way through giant ferns, damp moss and murmuring white water, offering welcome coolness even in the height of summer. Distance: 4 km round trip – Difference in altitude: 200 m – Duration: 2 h – Difficulty: easy.
